Nana’s Wacky Cake

This quick and easy chocolate cake is also known as “Depression-era Cake” or “Dump Cake”. It’s naturally dairy-free and egg-free and is so simple to throw together. My Nana makes this Wacky Cake for each and every family birthday and there is rarely left-overs. The cake is light, not overly rich and a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. Serve it with cool whip or whipped cream – whichever you prefer!




Nana’s Wacky Cake

  • 1 1/2 c. flour
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 3 tbs. cocoa
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/3 c. oil (or applesauce)
  • 1 tbs. vinegar
  • 1 c. cold water
  • 1 tsp. vanilla

Combine flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, and salt. Mix in remaining ingredients. Pour into a 9×9″ pan. Bake at 350º for 30-40 minutes. Double recipe for 9×13″ pan.
